Cody is a Leadership minor and a member of the prestigious Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows program. He will be working on various projects, ranging from personal interviews with the coaches to research for an upcoming book.

When asked how he was enjoying himself so far, he smiled and said, “I’ve had a wonderful time thus far and cannot wait to see what each new day brings. With each project, I’m learning about new leadership skills, current coaching debates, and hot-off-the-press techniques that the professionals are using. This is a great opportunity for me to immerse myself within a leadership world.”

We look forward to seeing what Mr. Benoit accomplishes, and we thank him for all of his hard work on behalf of The Coaching Association.

The Coaching Association is a network of executive and business coaches with extensive experience in leadership development, business and organizational consulting and career transition counseling. If you are interested in the internship program at The Coaching Association, contact Executive Director, Barbara Demarest at info@TheCoachingAssociation.com or 336-303-1577.

I’ve mentioned the folks working on Authentic Happiness before on this blog; they are led by Dr. Marty Seligman and located within the University of Pennsylvania. I first learned about Seligman via his book, Learned Optimism, which I read in the 1990s and still find reasons to think about (on a fairly regular basis) today. The institute and Dr. Seligman are pursuing the study of “positive psychology,” which differs from seeing the world and patients as a series of issues and problems, to instead focusing on “positive emotions, strengths-based character, and healthy institutions.”

Because I am one of the 700,000 people signed up with Authentic Happiness, I received their announcement about a new Master program in Positive Psychology (MAPP). I share the announcement in its entirety below.

For those of you considering school, this may be of interest. It is an executive education model, so many of the students will also be full-time workers who travel in to Philadelphia for the program. I think it sounds really fantastic and if someone would give me a scholarship, I’d be all over it!

****

Dear Authentic Happiness Member:

We are happy to announce that the Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) program at the University of Pennsylvania is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year.

We are looking for the next class to join the more than 190 students who have enrolled in this extraordinary program in the five years since its inception and who are now applying positive psychology in education, medicine, law, business, psychotherapy, counseling, coaching, consulting, and elsewhere. Some of our younger students are now enrolled in Ph.D., J.D., or M.D. programs to further their training before engaging in the practice of positive psychology.

Because MAPP is offered on an executive education model, most of our students continue to work full time during the year and commute to Philadelphia – from across the United States and as far away as Mexico, the UK, Sudan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand! – for the on-site classes. While many students have already earned other master’s degrees or even Ph.D.’s, only a Bachelor’s degree is required for admission.

If you hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (or will complete one this spring), have an excellent academic record, and are interested in learning about positive psychology and its applications from leading researchers and practitioners in the field, we invite you to find out more about our program. If you think the program may be a good fit for you, we encourage you to submit an application before the deadline of March 1, 2010.

For more information about our program, please visit our website at www.pennpositivepsych.org

In addition to general program information, the website contains a link to a recorded Virtual Information Session that features input from administrators, professors, and students of the MAPP program.
Please feel free to pass this message along to anyone else you know who might be interested in this program.

Whatever you choose to do in this New Year, we hope it will be one of authentic happiness for you and yours.

During October 2009, TCA Coach John Alexander will be in Europe working with the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative. For more information about the initiative we’ve re-printed the Call for Action press release from GRLI below:

A World in Need of Globally Responsible Leadership – Call for Action
A pioneering group of 60 business schools/learning institutions and companies representing five continents, over 300,000 students & 1.000,000 employees are engaged in developing a next generation of globally responsible leaders.

The Globally Responsible Leaders Initiative (GRLI) was co-founded and is supported by the United Nations Global Compact and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). The GRLI’s mission is to act as a catalyst to develop a next generation of globally responsible leaders. In doing so it challenges the issues of the company for the 21st Century, the mission of business schools/learning institutions and the process for cultural change in organisations.

Bill Gates in Time magazine in August this year said:

“Capitalism has improved the lives of billions of people … But it has left out billions more…” “… we need a more creative capitalism: an attempt to stretch the market forces so that more companies can benefit from doing work that makes more people better off.”

There is a need for this creative capitalism, but also a need for a more responsible capitalism and a leadership able to make that responsibility happen. A Call for Action is made to business leaders & academics by the GRLI with three main areas of focus:
* Re-visiting the raison d’être of the firm
* Integrating leadership and ethics
* Making corporate statesmanship a reality

“The (… current free market …) model becomes increasingly ambiguous and paradoxical. At the same time as producing more wealth than ever and ensuring unprecedented growth, it pollutes, excludes, and often encourages domination and social injustice. It promotes a desperate race that no longer has any visible purpose, or raison d’être beyond the race itself.”

Concretely, GRLI believes that business schools should focus on educating the whole person as entrepreneurs, leaders, and corporate statesmen. Leadership is the art of motivating, communicating, empowering and convincing people to accept a new vision of sustainable development and the necessary change that this implies.

Realising the urgency with which a failing system needs to be adapted to human needs in a globalized economy, we will:
1. enhance the change factors that will help us to implement a more sustainable development model
2. embed the appropriate values and behaviours in our strategies and management practices
3. aim to develop pedagogies and curricula which enable the development of a globally responsible leadership
4. exchange innovations, good practices and cases in business and education, and share them with our partners and the wider public through the development of learning platforms for critical and constructive dialogue.

The GRLI call for action aims at re-enforcing the strengths of our entrepreneurial system while correcting its defects and the financial excesses of the system. We strive to achieve this through enhancing responsibility at all levels.

A new way of educating managers and a next generation of globally responsible leaders will play a major role in making this come true.
